I’m with you Rhae on Dan’s crit of your opening sentence. Spec fic is a hard genre to work in and you’ve done a brilliant job in creating the scene and the tension for the piece in ONE sentence. And now it’s time to insert said humans into this world.

As I’m restricted to responding on my posts, I just wanted to say that you made some fine points, although I don’t see why you place so much stock in introducing a character in the opening sentence. As far as what agents and editors say, one need only browse through the latest titles in a bookstore to see that, while their advice may lead to publication, it won’t necessarily lead to anything worth reading.
